It is located in the northernmost part of Pakistan, bordering the countries of Afghanistan, China, and India. The region covers an area of approximately 72,000 square kilometers. Its capital is Skardu, which is also the largest city in the region. Skardu is a beautiful city, situated at the foot of the Himalayan Mountains. The climate of the area varies depending on the elevation. In the higher parts of the region, the climate is cold and harsh, with heavy snowfall in the winter months. At lower elevations, the climate is more moderate, with warm summers and cool winters.

What is famous about Gilgit-Baltistan?

Gilgit-Baltistan, also known as Northern Areas, is a region located in the northernmost part of Pakistan. It is famous for its stunning natural beauty, including the Karakoram, Himalayas, and Hindu Kush mountain ranges. The region is known for its snow-capped peaks, glaciers, and crystal-clear rivers, making it a popular destination for trekkers, hikers, and mountaineers.

Cuisine 

When it comes to food, Gilgit-Baltistan is known for its traditional dishes such as Chapshuro (a pie stuffed with minced beef, herbs, onions, and other delectables), Gyaling/Gral (a thin, stretchy wheat bread that looks like a bunch of pancakes), Marzan  (A bowl of pure apricot oil is served on a small mound of Marzan, gooey, but slightly dry wheat dough), Balay (a kind of noodles along with the goat meat chunks and broth) that provided the flavor and basis, Namkeen tea, and Prapo are some famous dishes of GB.

Sports 

Sports are an integral part of the culture of Gilgit-Baltistan. The region is home to some of the most beautiful natural landscapes, making it an ideal place for outdoor sports. with traditional sports such as polo, football, and cricket being popular among the locals. Polo, in particular, is a traditional sport that is played with great passion and skill. Kopolo, ice skating, skiing, and other winter sports have historically maintained their high levels of popularity across Gilgit-Baltistan. Ski tournaments are held every year at the top-notch ski resort in Gilgit’s Naltar Valley. A polo match is held in Gilgit for spectator enjoyment every November.

Dress 

The dress of Gilgit Baltistan is also an important aspect of its culture. The traditional dress for men is a long tunic called a ‘shalwar kameez’ and a turban. Women typically wear a long dress called a ‘shalwar kameez’ or “gharara” (long flowing skirt and blouse) along with a “dupatta” (long scarf). The dress is usually made from locally sourced materials such as wool and cotton. Traditional dress is often worn during festivals and ceremonies. Many of the women also cover their heads with a “chaddar” (shawl).

Family System 

The family system in Gilgit-Baltistan is based on traditional values and customs. The family is considered the most important unit of society, and the community is very close-knit. The family is responsible for the well-being of its members, and many decisions are made collectively. The father is considered the head of the household, and the mother is responsible for the home and children. The extended family is also very important, and grandparents often play a major role in raising children. The divorce rate is very low in Gilgit-Baltistan.

 Language?

The official language of Gilgit-Baltistan is Urdu, but the local population also speaks a variety of languages, including Shina, Balti, and Brushaski. The majority of the population is Muslim, with a significant minority of Shia Muslims.
